How to inspect the accessory belt drive for wear
The engine accessory drive is called the Accessory Belt Drive System (ABDS). The alternator, the power steering pump, the air conditioning compressor and, sometimes, the water pump are driven by a multi-ribbed accessory belt via the crankshaft. If any of these components fail, the car will not function optimally and its driver will suffer the adverse consequences of this.
Modern accessory belt drives can malfunction in a number of different ways which can sometimes be tricky to diagnose. The best way is to take a holistic approach and to examine the entire drive system for wear as well as for any irregularities.
